Abby twisted her hands at her waist, her face flushed, and moistened her lips. “I could do either song,” she said. “But I know that one better.”

Sara studied her. Something wasn’t right, but she couldn’t put her finger on what it was. Nerves? Abby was obviously nervous. But was that all, or was she, herself, trying too hard to fulfill the dream?

“Sing one and then the other and we’ll pick,” Campbell urged, breaking into her thoughts.

Abby bobbed her head and inhaled. “Okay.” She reached behind her and started the music, but missed her cue, the song flowing past. She jumped in seconds later, hesitant at first, then increasing her volume.

At the sound of her voice, Sara tensed. This was wrong. Yet ... how could it be? All the signs pointed to her: the style of music, the leading she hid something from others. Though her dad had been nice, friendly. So, he wasn’t the issue. But—

Sara clenched her hands into fists. But Abby couldn’t carry a tune.

She tried not to wince and keep her face blank. However, her insides churned just the same. This was bad because unless some miracle happened between now and Friday, Abby wouldn’t make the cut.

Only now, so much was riding on this, Campbell’s feelings, her promises to Abby, the dream. The dream.

How had she misjudged things again? She couldn’t afford to keep making mistakes, not when people’s souls were involved.

Her nails cutting into her palms, she glanced at Angus. His eyebrows lifted.

Was he the reason she hadn’t seen this coming? Had she been so consumed by him, by this connection they had ... by feelings ... that she’d not heard God’s voice?

She endured the song, by the last strain unable to sit any longer. “I need to use the restroom,” she said. Making her escape, she slipped into the small guest bath and took a seat on the toilet. She buried her head in her hands.

Tears slipped between her fingers. What was happening to her? This morning she’d been late for worship. Now, she’d misjudged things. How could she possibly help anyone if she couldn’t get the simplest leadings right?

“Is that what You want from me?” she prayed. “To know what it’s like to be normal? Well, I get it.” Her last words poured forth bitter, heated, and the Light inside her flickered and faded.
